MEDIAPRO will provide Video Assistant Referee (VAR) services for the South American Football Federation (CONMEBOL) for all the matches at the continent’s flag-ship football tournament between nations, which is set to take place in Brazil from June 14th to July 7th. The MEDIAPRO Group won the public tender in 2018 to provide VAR technology at the most important CONMEBOL competitions, which include the Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, Cup Winners’ Cup and the Copa America.
The Copa America Brazil 2019 will enjoy VAR technology for the very first time to help analyse controversial moments during the matches. The 30-strong MEDIAPRO project team will be made up of staff from Portugal, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay, with Nuno Pereira at the helm, covering a total of 27 matches across the stadia in São Paulo (Morumbi and Corinthians), Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre and Rio de Janeiro, including the final.
The VAR solution chosen by MEDIAPRO for the tournament will be the dencentralized model with a Video Operation Room (VOR). 6 VOR’s are set to be installed at each competition venue with everything they need to provide video refereeing technology. In addition, each site will feature 24 cameras per system and 3 Xeebras (instantaneous replay systems especially designed for technical teams and referees as part of the technology needed to roll out VAR.
MEDIAPRO will also provide training two weeks before the start of the event from June 6th to June 12th with a friendly tournament in Rio de Janeiro at the Barra da Tijuca training ground.
This is the second season running that MEDIAPRO has provided VAR technology at the Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana and Cup Winners’ Cup as well as providing technical equipment and personnel in preparation for the Copa America.
The MEDIAPRO Group is currently the official VAR provider for the football leagues in Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Chile and the UAE as well as providing services for the CAF and FIBA. It was recently chosen to provide VAR services for the Greek Super League (the football first division) supplying VAR services for the next five seasons together with the Greek company In Digital.
